This short course is designed to teach and apply the fundamentals and practices of process safety and loss prevention in the industry. The course content is comprehensive and provides extensive analysis of various process safety-related concepts along with worked out examples, and case studies. The course predominantly highlights the important technical and management fundamentals of process safety. This emphasis on the fundamentals helps the practicing engineers understand the concepts and apply them accordingly.

The course provides an overview of the elements of an efficient process safety management (PSM) systems. The elements are demonstrated by studying major incident case studies. The course material covers Risk Based Process Safety Management System elements identified by AIChE Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS), which comprehensively includes the OSHA 29 CFR 1910 Subpart H – Hazardous Materials standard number 1910.119 – Process safety management of highly hazardous chemicals. The course also discusses European Union Council Directive 96/82/EC on the control of major-accident hazards involving dangerous substances (with the amendment 2012/18/EU – Seveso III).

The main hazardous phenomena in a process plant (toxic hazards, fire and explosion, chemical reaction hazards and other hazards) as well as the techniques to identify these hazards will be discussed.

The attendees will then receive an introduction to the principles and practices of risk assessment (consequence and likelihood) and risk control methodologies. The concept of inherently safer design and layers of protection will be discussed.

The principles of emergency response planning and the techniques of the incident investigation will be presented.

Finally, the impact of human factors and safety culture on process safety performances will be discussed.
